MLK Day of Service with Habitat Wake

MLK Day of Service Header 1024x556 MLK Day of Service with Habitat Wake

Monday, January 19th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Celebrated on the third Monday of January, MLK Day is a time when the nation pauses to remember Dr. King’s life and legacy by making this a day of community service, “a day on, not a day off.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'”

Each year on MLK Day, Americans across the country come together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. MLK Day is a chance to make an impact in your community.

What are you doing to make a difference on MLK Day?

Habitat for Humanity of Wake County will be completing three home preservation projects and two raised gardens in the Long Acres/Apollo Heights neighborhoods. These events are part of our Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative. NRI has partnered with Long Acres and Apollo Heights to foster and engage the residence and other significant stakeholders in the community to develop a common plan of recovery and vision for the future.

Over 60,000 Smiling Faces

Making the Season Brighter!

Over the past several weeks, we have encouraged shoppers to drop off unwrapped toys for the local, Toys for Tots initiative. Today, Anthony Montano, a ReStore employee retrieved donations from all ReStores and delivered them to the Toys for Tots distribution warehouse. I suspect this warehouse is similar to what Santa’s warehouse looks like, just prior to Christmas! Everywhere you look toys, bikes, games, and stuffed animals piled high.

This year over 66,000 toys will be distributed in the next few days to local children. These children are not unlike any others however, living in a low-income situation. It’s unfortunate that many families must choose between paying rent, purchasing food or buying Christmas presents for their children. Toys for Tots is one organization that has stepped up to the plate to help make Christmas a little bit brighter for these families.

Thank you for all who donated, whether you dropped off at one of our ReStores or dropped off elsewhere – You Made a Difference!

Happy Holidays!
