Meet Mike, Our Volunteer Spotlight

June 30, 2015

Mike-Farrell_Volunteer-Spotlight Mike is our Volunteer of the moment! We have so many great volunteers who not only help in the ReStores, but work in Construction, Deconstruction, A Brush with Kindness, and Office support. Volunteers are the cornerstone of our mission - to build homes, communities and hope. Every volunteer helps make a difference in our community and without them, we would not have been able to build 500 homes in Wake County! Volunteer: Mike Farrell Q: How long have you been volunteering with Habitat Wake and what brought you to us? A: I started volunteering in the Cary ReStore when they opened in 2011. I've been consistently working there and in May of this year, started volunteering here in the Apex ReStore. I've volunteered with Habitat previously at Habitat of Broome County. I volunteered in construction and deconstruction but really perfer the ReStore. When we moved to Cary from VT, I learned that the Cary ReStore was relatively close by and just showed up to see what I could do. I enjoy volunteering because it gives me a sense of making a difference. "I've contributed to the good of others and this is very gratifying!" Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself. A: I like to putter, keep busy, and work with my hands. Volunteering in the ReStore gives me the opportunity to do all the things I like. I really like the people I work with (staff and volunteers) and the customers are so appreciative when you help them. My wife and I originally retired to Rutland VT however, after a few winters, realized the weather wasn't for us. We moved to Cary so that we could be closer to our children who live in Cary and Charlotte. We certainly appreciate the weather too! Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I enjoy doing yard work, gardening, and cooking. Planting and doing landscape in the yard is therapeutic and rewarding. I like home cooking - nothing fancy, but real food! Q: What is your favorite meal? A: I love a boiled dinner - corn beef and cabbage. You can also never go wrong with a hamburger. Volunteer Today_vs_button
